Buckland Estate sits on a rise above the Avon Valley, a heritage homestead with a wraparound verandah and a red roof that catches the last of the afternoon sun. It is one of those properties that barely needs styling — the paddocks, the timber fences and the old sandstone buildings do most of the work on their own. Grace and Lachie chose it for exactly that reason, and their day made full use of it, from the moment the vintage cars rolled up the driveway to the last dance under the fairy lights.

This is the story of an easy, unhurried autumn wedding — two families gathered on a hilltop, a homestead lit gold at sunset, and a couple who spent the whole day looking like they couldn't quite believe their luck.

CHAPTER I

Two Halves of the Morning

Lachie got ready with the groomsmen on the lawn at Buckland Estate, suits still on their hangers and the homestead sitting quietly in the background. There's a particular kind of calm to a groom's morning — less fuss, more standing around cracking jokes while someone fixes someone else's tie. Ours was to catch it before the day picked up pace.

The last few minutes before the suits officially became wedding suits.

Across the property, Grace's morning had its own rhythm — the small, deliberate details that go into a bride getting ready. A finished pair of shoes set beside the invitation suite, a boutonniere pinned just so, the quiet concentration of everyone doing their one job well.

Before the noise of the ceremony began, Lachie had one quiet moment with a groomsman, caught in black and white — the kind of frame that says more about nerves and love than any posed shot ever could.

CHAPTER II

Vows on the Verandah

Buckland Estate's homestead is the kind of building that photographs itself — deep verandahs, white timber columns and a red roofline against a clear autumn sky. Guests arrived to find a row of vintage cars parked along the driveway, and the whole scene had the feel of stepping back a hundred years, just for an afternoon.

Grace walked the aisle toward Lachie under a clean blue sky, rows of white chiavari chairs facing the homestead's front steps. No rain to work around this time, no rush — just good light, a still afternoon, and two families holding their breath at the same moment.

No storm to push through this time — just two people, a homestead lawn, and every reason in the world to take their time saying it.

Straight after the ceremony, Grace and Lachie signed the register at a small table set on the verandah — bouquet resting to one side, the whole wedding party gathered loosely around them. It's a formality on paper, but it never feels that way in the moment. It's the first quiet minute of being married.

Officially, unmistakably married — pen still in hand.

Once the paperwork was done, the celebration properly began — guests laughing, the wedding party trading hugs, and the first proper exhale of the day. This is always our favourite window to photograph: nobody posing, everybody relieved and happy at once.

CHAPTER III

Golden Hour at Buckland

Once the formalities were behind them, we had the whole Buckland Estate property to work with — red dirt driveways, weathered timber fences, open paddocks and that vintage green car parked exactly where the light wanted it. Autumn afternoon light in the Avon Valley has a particular warmth to it, and by late afternoon the whole hillside was glowing.

That car earned its keep all afternoon.

Away from the group, Grace and Lachie took a slow walk along the estate's driveway, veil catching the wind, both of them clearly enjoying having a minute without an audience. These stretches of the day rarely make it into the highlight reel, but they're often our favourite images — nobody performing, just two people walking together as husband and wife for the first time.

The golden hour kiss is a cliché for a reason — it works, every single time, especially when the light is doing what it did over Buckland's paddocks that evening.

Right on cue, the light did exactly what we hoped it would.

Buckland Estate has a handful of quirky props scattered around the property, and an old wooden rowboat sitting out in the paddock turned out to be one of our favourite backdrops of the day — completely unexpected, and somehow perfect against the late sun.

Back near the car, the details got their moment too — the bouquet of dried florals resting against the bonnet, sun dropping fast behind the tree line.

The whole valley turned gold right on schedule.

By the time the light finally dropped, the whole bridal party had regrouped for one last round of photos — everyone loose, sunburnt and thrilled, cheering somewhere in the middle of the frame.

CHAPTER IV

Under the Fairy Lights

As the sky faded to dusk, Buckland Estate's reception space came into its own — strings of fairy lights overhead, a timber pergola glowing warm against the last blue light of the evening, and the whole wedding party filing in for the night ahead.

The homestead by day, and an entirely different kind of beautiful by night.

Under a floral arbour strung with lights, Lachie dipped Grace for one last dramatic kiss before the speeches started — the kind of moment that had the whole bridal party cheering from the sidelines.

And then, under the timber pergola, their first dance as a married couple — string lights overhead, the day's noise finally settling into something quiet and just theirs.

The last frame of the day, and somehow the quietest one too.
