Cassandra & Jonathan

Cassandra began her day getting ready onsite at Chapel Farm Estate, in the beautiful Farm Boudoir. Having the bride prepare right at the venue gave us room to photograph the quieter details of the morning without rushing between locations — hair, the dress, jewellery and all those small finishing touches that slowly turn an ordinary morning into the start of a wedding day. Earlier still, she'd shared a first look with her dad, one of those quiet moments that says more than any speech could. A wedding story shouldn't begin at the ceremony. It begins hours before.

There's a particular hush that settles over a bridal suite once hair and makeup are nearly done and the dress finally goes on. Conversations get quieter. Someone laughs a little too loudly to cut the nerves. It's the good kind of anticipation.

While Cassandra was preparing, Jonathan spent the morning getting ready with the boys in another part of Chapel Farm Estate, and the surroundings gave this half of the day a completely different character. One of our favourite features was the beautiful vintage-style coach positioned near the reception area — more on that later — but even without it, Jonathan's suit and the rustic estate around him made for a relaxed, easy morning that contrasted beautifully against Cassandra's elegant, emotional preparations.

Before the ceremony, Cassandra and Jonathan slipped away for a private moment together — just the two of them, in a beautiful rustic room lined with weathered stone walls and worn red-leather armchairs. We gave them the space to experience it naturally rather than directing every movement. The reaction, the smiles, the held breath before either of them said a word — that was all theirs. Our job was simply to preserve it.

You can plan a wedding down to the minute, but you can't plan that face. Our job is just to be quick enough to catch it.

Outside, the weather kept changing. It wasn't going to be a normal March wedding in Perth.

Western Australia was in the middle of significant weather associated with Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle, and conditions at Chapel Farm Estate were becoming increasingly unpredictable through the morning. For a wedding photography and cinematography team, rain creates challenges that go well beyond simply getting wet. Cameras, lenses and audio equipment all need protecting; shooting positions have to change quickly; and every decision has to balance getting the shot against keeping the couple, guests, crew and gear safe.

But there was another reality we couldn't ignore: Cassandra and Jonathan only had one 27 March 2026. Their ceremony couldn't simply be recreated on a sunnier afternoon. So we prepared, adapted, and kept documenting their story.

Then the rain became heavy. Very heavy — you can see it falling in the ceremony photographs. At that point, our responsibility was to make careful decisions in real time: protect the equipment as much as circumstances allowed, adapt our positions, and keep capturing the ceremony with safety at the centre of everything we did. There are weddings where everything is controlled — beautiful light, plenty of time, perfect conditions. This wasn't one of them. And that's exactly why these photographs mean so much.

For us, wedding photography has never been simply about arriving with good cameras and taking beautiful photographs when everything goes to plan. Anyone can hope for perfect conditions — professionalism matters most when conditions aren't perfect. There was heavy rain around us, expensive equipment to protect, and a team working through genuinely difficult conditions. But in front of us were two people getting married. This wasn't a styled shoot that could be postponed. It was Cassandra and Jonathan's wedding, and our goal was to do everything reasonably and safely possible to keep documenting it — not because of the value of a booking, but because of the value of the memories we'd been trusted to preserve.

Couples often worry when they see rain in the forecast for their wedding, and we understand why — you spend months planning the day and naturally imagine clear skies. But rain doesn't automatically mean disappointing photographs. Overcast conditions create wonderfully soft, flattering light for portraits, and wet surfaces, darker skies and moody clouds give images an atmosphere that's impossible to manufacture on a clear day. Cassandra and Jonathan's photographs don't hide the weather. They embrace it. Years from now, the rain will bring them straight back to exactly how their wedding felt.

Chapel Farm Estate turned out to be an especially fitting backdrop for this kind of day. Its rustic architecture, established gardens and natural surroundings gave us plenty of opportunities to keep creating as the weather shifted — darker skies brought out the greens of the property, wet pathways reflected light, and the sandstone buildings read richer against a grey sky.

When Cassandra and Jonathan walked together through the grounds, the photographs had a completely different feeling from the typical bright Perth summer wedding. Romantic. Moody. Natural. And completely theirs.

A day like this can't be covered properly without teamwork. A special thank you to Radvin and Atin, who assisted us throughout Cassandra and Jonathan's wedding — protecting equipment, helping with movement between locations, watching the changing conditions, and making sure we could keep working efficiently through it all. Most importantly, our team made it through the day safely and our equipment came through without damage.

When we look back at this wedding, the storm isn't what stands out most. It's Jonathan looking at Cassandra. It's the laughter during preparations. It's two people holding hands and walking together through Chapel Farm, and their families watching them make their commitment to one another while rain fell around them. The weather simply became the backdrop. Cassandra and Jonathan remained the story.
